Match Review
3rd December 2000 Burton Joyce 3 v 6 Gedling Town
Scorers: Sam Smith(2), Oliver Woodward
This was billed as the BIG ONE! and what a match it turned out to be.
BJ started briskly and the crowd could hardly believe it when, after just 2 minutes,
Sam Smith jinked his way through 4 players to slot in the first goal. 1-0. BJ nearly
went two goals to the good when Anthony Kefer intercepted a poor goal kick but the
Gedling goalkeeper redeemed himself with a good save from Ant's firmly struck shot. Five
minutes later Gedling equalised from a corner, these were going to prove to be our un-doing.
Literally from the resulting kick-off Sam Smith went forward, beat a player and laid the ball
on to Oliver Woodward, Woody beat two and placed his shot superbly, 2-1. Five minutes later,
after some pressure from Gedling they equalised to make it 2-2 at half-time.
The half-time talk was up-beat, the boys were told that no team had scored two past Gedling
this season. The second half started with a repeat of the first, Sam Smith took the ball on
and fired in BJ's 3rd (and Sams 18th in the league this season). Gedling however, came
straight back to equalise from another well placed corner, this was the first time Gedling
had been in front in the match. This seemed to deflate BJ would had worked hard but just
could not seem to keep the lead. Gedling piled on more pressure and after a messy goalmouth
scramble went further ahead 3-5. Jamie Gibbs, who had another good game (certainly busier
than last week) made some good saves to stop the score widening further but another brilliant
corner five minutes from the end was slotted home by the visitors to make the final
score 3-6.
Verdict :
A terrific match to watch - unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the final score, but
at least Gedling knew they had been in a game!
Manager's Comment :
"Gedling must be the strongest team in the division - lets face it they are unbeaten so far
but we must take heart that we scored three past them - thats a feat in itself. The boys
gave their all and its tribute to them that the Gedling manager said after the game that
we were probably the best opposition they had faced this season."
Performance of the Week :
Jamie Gibbs - Jamie worked very hard in this game and produced some brilliant stops to keep the
scoreline respectable. Well Done Jamie!!
