Match Review
4th March 2001 Sherwood 1 v 0 Burton Joyce
Scorer:
This was a re-arranged match after a previous cancellation. BJ won 3-1 at the
Poplars so we knew that Sherwood would be gunning for revenge. The weather was
cold but the pitch was playable, skiddy on top but firm underneath.
BJ started the match playing a new formation of 2-2-2 with Tom Parkinson and
Anthony Kefer up front. Right from the start Sherwood seemed to be on top
and BJ just seemed not to be at 100%. Despite this BJ were unlucky not to
go ahead when Sam Smith shot across the goal and no-one was there to pop it in.
This was going to prove to be the problem all the game. Sherwood did set up
some good attacking moves and were given more space in mid-field than we would
have liked. Jamie Gibbs made some good saves, holding on to the ball with
a lot of confidence. Midway through the first half Sherwood won a corner, we
knew from the first game that they could take a good corner. A superb corner
kick was met by a Sherwood attacker who scored with a free header. BJ's marking
was lax and in fairness to Sherwood the header was taken very well. The rest of the
half did not produce any further real chances and BJ went into half-time 0-1
down.
In the second half BJ were playing down the slope and spent much of this half
encamped in the Sherwood half of the pitch. Anthony Kefer was unlucky not to score
on two occasions, the first just going wide and the second brought a good save
from the Sherwood keeper. Sherwood did break away a few times but Chris Jackson and
Niels Hart were both up to the job, both had good games. On one occasion,
however Sherwood broke through the defence and theit attacker homed in on goal,
Jamie Gibbs the BJ keeper was quick off the mark and superbly narrowed the angle
forcing the attacker to shoot straight at him, the shot was then cleared. Towards
the end of the game Anthony was unlucky as his shot was cleared off the line, it
was one of those days, but all credit to Sherwood who battled throughout
the game and eventually came in 1-0 winners.
Verdict :
Very much a game of two halves. The ball just didn't run for us today.
Manager's Comment :
"It was one of those days I'm afraid. We lost the game in the first half and
despite putting on a lot of pressure in the second half we just could
not pull the game back."
Performance of the Week :
Jamie Gibbs - Jamie played very well today particularly as the ball was
quite slippy. His one-on-one save in the second half was tremendous, the way he
narrowed the angle was first class. He also clung on to everything else which
came his way. Well done Jamie!!
