Match Review
8th October 2000 Burton Joyce 7 v 2 Carlton Boys
Scorers: Sam Smith (6), Oliver Woodward
It was thought before the game that the team to score first would get the upper hand.
The game started briskly, the weather was dry although heavy rain the day before had
made the pitch very greasy on top. BJ got that vital first goal after 7 minutes when
Sam Smith aimed a superb low shot from the right into the far corner of the net. Carlton
looked like they would get straight back into the game but were unlucky to see a firmly
struck shot just go wide. Midway through the half Mathew Powroznyk took a free kick from
the halfway line which went to the far post and Sam was there to stroke it into the net.
Another free kick, this time nearer the goal, was quickly taken by Oliver Woodward and
before Carlton had really noticed Sam had got his hat-trick. Half time 3-0.
The second half started with Carlton coming back into the game and they scored with a
good effort after a couple of minutes. They nearly scored another in the next minute
but Tom Parkinson was swift off his line to thwart the attack. Good goal-kicking from
Tom also helped us to move down the field and set up some good chances which started
to bring BJ into the game again. Oliver Woodward took the ball upfield past a couple
of players, passed to Anthony Kefer who in turn beat one player and fed the ball to Sam
who duly obliged again. Great Stuff!
Oliver Woodward was in the action again when he beat two players and chipped the
goalkeeper from 20 yards. At this point BJ brought on some substitutes and they
all got involved with play almost immediately. Two of the subs helped create the
6th goal when Jamie Gibbs passed to Anthony Kefer who fed James Clark who in turn
pushed the ball on to Sam who converted BJ's 6th goal. Soon after Mathew Powroznyk
fired a left foot shot which was just tipped over by the Carlton keeper. With five
minutes to go Sam Smith ran up the right touchline from well inside our half, came
inside and drove a shot into the net for our 7th, and his 6th, goal of the game.
BJ's new signing, Daniel Roberts, came on with a few minutes to go and was so unlucky
to concede Carltons second goal after making an excellent save.
Verdict :
A performance containing similar play to last week and look at the difference in result.
A good morale booster for the boys.
Manager's Comment :
"It is nice to get back on the winning trail again after losing out in the last few matches.
I'm very encouraged by the teamwork which is now really starting to take effect. It was
also great to see both teams so well supported: there were about 60 people round the
pitch which is great for this level of game."
"Performance of the Week" awarded to Sam Smith - not only for his 6 goals but for his tireless
running and superb efforts during training. Well Done Smithy!!
