Match Review

10th December 2000 Burton Joyce 1 v 4 Netherfield Colts B
Scorer: Oliver Woodward

This was a match that BJ could have done with winning. With two games in hand over some of the higher teams a win today would put us in a good position to get into Europe next year.
Whats that you say - Europe? - well we can all dream can't we?

Anyway, conditions were fair but the pitch was slippy. The game started pretty evenly with both teams managing to get shots on target. Sam Smith did one of his jinky runs and was unlucky to see his resulting shot just sail over the bar. Its probably fair to say that as the game went on Netherfield put more & more pressure on the BJ defence with Mathew Powroznyk and Niels Hart called into action on quite a few occasions. The half time score just looked like being 0-0 when, really from nowhere, Netherfield strung some good passes together and had a shot at goal, Jamie Gibbs was unlucky not to take the ball cleanly and the ball was slotted into the net. Half-time 0-1

The half-time team talk by Andy Parkinson told a few home truths, the fact was we were just half-a-yard to slow and let them have too much room particularly in mid-field. Within two minutes of the restart Oliver Woodward was so unlucky to hand-ball in the area and the resulting penalty was well hit leaving Jamie no chance. 2-0. Soon after BJ went 3-0 down after a good move by Netherfield from mid-field.

A few changes were made to the BJ line-up in the second half and eventually it could be seen that BJ were coming more into the game. The Netherfield goalkeeper had a good game and thwarted quite a few BJ chances on goal. Eventually BJ pulled one back when Sam Smith received a ball from Anthony Kefer, Sam then split the Netherfield defence and Oliver Woodward stroked the ball home. Unfortunately this was too late and the final whistle went shortly afterwards.

Ah well - back to that dream!

Verdict : A few weeks ago we beat Netherfield 4-0 - this time were were on the receiving end. We did not play to the best of our capabilities.

Manager's Comment : " Yes I'm a bit disappointed, especially after we played so well against Gedling Town. We could have been a bit sharper but to be fair to Netherfield they were the best team on the day."

Performance of the Week : Niels Hart - Niels is probably one of the most improved players this season. Niels worked hard in defence both today and in training last Friday. Well Done Niels!!
