Match Review
17th September 2000 Burton Joyce 1 v 2 Ravenshead B
Scorers: Sam Smith
Our first home match of the season certainly brought us back down to earth after the 12-0
victory of last week. The first half was fairly even, Sam Smith for BJ hit the cross-bar
early on but unfortunately we went 1-0 down after 10 minutes after a messy goalmouth scramble,
and the score remained this way until half time. One minute after the restart we went 2-0 down
by a well taken goal. At this stage BJ, rather than accept defeat, started to play and move
forward. Sam Smith scored a superb individual goal with 10 minutes to go, picking up the ball
well inside our half and going the full length of the pitch before slotting a well struck
low ball home. The remaining minutes were all pressure from BJ, a header just wide from James
Bird followed Sam Smith hitting the foot of the post. Praise must go to the Ravenshead
goalkeeper who saved quite a few shots without fumbling despite the wet ball. Unfortunately
the referees whistle came to early - this was certainly an exciting match for both players,
managers & the larger than average crowd.
Verdict :
We were unlucky not to equalise in the second half after all that presssure!
Manager's Comment :
"The boys' were much improved in the second half, and I'm encouraged that we had so many
chances on goal. Unfortunately it just wasn't our day. Occasionally we got a little
out of shape but we'll be working on that."
"Performance of the Week" awarded to James Bird - well done James!
