Match Review
30th April 2001 Carlton 2000 0 v 6 Burton Joyce
Scorers: Oliver Woodward (2), Tom Parkinson (2), Anthony Kefer, James Bird
The last match of this season saw BJ face Carlton on a fine dry evening. We had played
them twice this season so far with BJ coming out on top each time. This evening Carlton
looked ready for the challenge, we were hoping our lads would play with the same
determination as shown against East Leake last week.
BJ started out by pressuring the Carlton goal. Daniel Roberts shot just wide and the
resulting corner was taken by Sam Smith. The ball was lofted deftly into the 6 yard box
and Anthony Kefer was on hand to slot the ball in. A repeat corner happened just minutes
later, Sam repeated the cross and this time Oliver Woodward scored at the second attempt, 2-0.
The remainder of the first half saw further BJ pressure with the odd counter attack by
Carlton most of which were stemmed by the impressive Chris Jackson in the BJ defence. Chris had
a terrific game throughout and was rewarded with Performance of the Week for his efforts.
Sam Smith was on top form and had a superb shot saved by the keeper and moments later another
of Sams jinking runs culminated with a shot just skimming off the post. Half Time 2-0.
The second started in much the same way with much pressure by BJ on the Carlton goal. BJ won
a corner early on, Sam Smith lofted in another well flighted ball and Tom Parkinson pressed
the ball in to make it 3-0. BJ piled on more pressure with much of the play being in Carlton's
half of the pitch. Mathew Powroznyk was even pushing forward and when his shot from the corner of the
penalty area stopped on the goal line near the keeper, the ever quick thinking James Bird was
sharp to react and turned the ball in, 4-0. A few minutes later Tom Parkinson found some
space in mid-field and moved forward with the ball, he took aim and fired in the goal of the match
with a terrific shot from well outside the penalty area. Oliver Woodward got his second and BJ's
sixth after a super pass from Sam Smith.
Sam Smith worked tirelessly bringing the ball forward on numerous occasions, he was unlucky
not to score himself but should feel proud that he helped to set up 4 of the 6 goals. BJ ran out
6-0 winners in the end.
Verdict :
A good finish to the season.
Manager's Comment :
"It was pleasing to see three goals coming from corners, so often we've been on the
receiving end and we've been trying to address this in recent training sessions. Good to
go out with a victory. I believe we have finished 6th and I'm pleased with that, the boys
have played better as the season has gone on which is encouraging for next season. Well Done Boys!"
Performance of the Week :
Chris Jackson - Chris tackled superbly tonight, he gave 100% and blocked the opposition on
numerous occasions. Well Done Chris!!
